Yes.

The fact that it did coupled with the fact that it shouldn't is what
has thrown me.

Recommend against. They do not recommend it.

This will not be a huge problem. I already have miles of extension cable
to get from the master socket (in the kitchen, behind the washing
machine of all places) to the cavity under the stairs.

Currently I have the most basic setup:

BT -> Splitter -> ADSL
          |
          +-----> POTS

but it is all based upon wires taped down around corners and under
doors, which is ugly. Plus the LAN gear is all moving anyway.

If the proposed setup definitely will not work (rather than not supposed
to work but does anyway) then I will probably just install two cables
to the point where I will have the modem. I will have to say I've
installed just one and hide the other.
