[Gllug] "sda: unknown partition table" - USB flash disk scuppered?

I have a 1GB usb memory stick that was working fine until this afternoon
when I needed to print something from it. All of a sudden it's become an
8mb, and unusable.

--- dmesg ---
SCSI device sda: 16384 512-byte hdwr sectors (8 MB)
sda: Write Protect is off
sda: Mode Sense: 0b 00 00 08
sda: assuming drive cache: write through
 sda: unknown partition table
sd 4:0:0:0: Attached scsi removable disk sda
sd 4:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0
usb-storage: device scan complete

I tried to recreate some kind of partition table with fdisk but the
thing always reverts to this state.

Is it physically scuppered, or is the problem data corruption, and
fixable?

Thanks for your help,
TomSW
