My pedantry is itching too, but I'll ignore it mostly, on the basis that
the target audience don't give a shit, so ignoring that:
The cost argument is probably largely irrelevant (given that any student
that might be interested in Linux will know where to get 'doze for nowt so
the cost they see is the same).
Perhaps a little FUD would grab attention:
You can legally install a copy of Linux (grabbed from the net or a
friend) without worrying that you'll get someone from Microsoft
battering your door down in the middle of the night
