64mb ram is really pushing it. Is it possible to fit more?

You could try Xubuntu - the lighter Ubuntu, with XFCE. www.xubuntu.org. 
You'd need the 'alternate install' cd rather than the desktop cd, as the 
former is a memory friendly text install.
