Cheers - hadnt thought of that one.

The sort of thing I was thinking about is if the PC program  want to 
access only part of the file.  For example if rsync wants to update 1 
byte of a file then I guess it will fetch the whole file, write the byte 
and write the whole thing back again.

I agree that making things too magic and transparent hides the 
complexity of what is going.
