I have a monitor like this myself and also recently acquired an old
computer with an onboard Intel graphics chipset. I ended up going to PC
World and buying the cheapest graphics card I could afford (a Sapphire
with Radeon 7000 chipset; it cost £30). Obsolescent, but it still
works. Linux just wouldn't work decently with my Intel chipset; at
1024x768 24-bit there were vertical flickering lines down the screen
about every two inches.

Intel supply a driver, but it is based on a *very* ancient X release.
You can find it here:

You might be reluctant to do this if the graphics card cost as much as
if not more than the computer, but it was the only way I could get my
computer to display X decently.

Hope this helps,

Matt Smith
