Re. biodiesel figures, I knew Google was my friend.

Using 644,000 hectares of land in the UK would produce 4% of our current 
     diesel consumption.

The total land area of the UK is  24 482 000 hectares
So that's 65% of our land area just to supply us with diesel.
(Yes, I know - grow the stuff in sparsely inhabited areas and take it in 
by tanker)
