[Gllug] Suspend / resume from an external USB disk not supported by the BIOS

All I have left of my thinkpad (that works, anyway) is
the hard drive. I can resurrect its contents on my
girlfriend's laptop using a USB-IDE apaptor, which
isn't recognised by the BIOS - I need to have an
initrd on a normal USB stick.

Does anyone know how I could get suspend to disk
working in this situation? More specifically, resume;
suspending appears to work.
