Right, it required a glibc-2.3.3 installation again, which corrected the 
errors otherwise coming such as
host2:~ # ls *.rpm
/bin/ls: àò*: No such file or directory
/bin/ls: àò*: No such file or directory

now it is alright. Thanks a lot guys for your help!
