[Gllug] [OT probably?] Hardware question

I have a SCSI 3 device (68pin) - a tape drive.

But it doesn't seem to want to talk to my SCSI card -

00:0d.0 SCSI storage controller: Advanced System Products, Inc
ABP940-U / ABP960-U (rev 03)

(Advansys ABP940-U/ABP960-U)

which is probably quite an old card but it was bought second-hand so not
sure how old, but it only has a 25 pin external interface, so pretty old
I reckon.

But the card works fine with older/simpler tape drives eg:

adrian at dragoneye:~$ lsscsi
[0:0:1:0] tape HP C1533A A812 /dev/st0
[0:0:6:0] tape HP C1533A A708 /dev/st1
[1:0:0:0] disk ATA WDC WD2000JD-22H 08.0 /dev/sda

But I attempt to attach the other device I can see nothing at all on
scsi bus 0

How can I be sure it's that and not something else that's up?
