Indeed. Moreover it's likely that what they really mean is they want it 
in a form they can open in MS Word.

You can satisfy that with a text file, RTF file, .doc file or a number of 
other formats that Word will import with varying degrees of success.

Publishers will want to reformat the document to their own standards 
anyway.
