[Gllug] License debates

Hi

This month we've had a large license debate on the openstreetmap talk 
list which began here

and then spread to our legal-talk list.

It strikes me that our community is relatively new to old issues such as 
BSD vs. GPL and the like.

I was wondering what people here may think about any ways we could 
shortcut some of the flame wars and back and forth that's often prefaced 
with 'IANAL'.

I'm hoping that people here may have experience of the infancy of other 
FLOSS projects and how they did or didn't resolve these issues.
