Burning fossil fuels in a power station is significantly more
efficient than doing so in an internal combustion engine in a car.
However, IIRC, to charge a battery suitable to power a car takes 6
times as much energy as it will release, and I doubt that power
stations are 6 times more efficient at extracting energy from fossil
fuels.
