The book "Backroom Boys : The Secret Return of the British Boffin" by 
Francis Spufford has a great chapter on the development of Elite.


Well recommended.
One great anecdote in the book is of an SR-71 cruising at 60000 feet 
above the Caribbean. Air traffic control requests the pilot to alter 
course by several miles - much to his surprise, as here they are flying 
in spacesuits in the stratosphere. Then a Concorde comes past, with a 
hundred people on board in shirtsleeves eating canapes.
