The original router was probably partially fried by lightning - a common
symptom is poor or distorted transmission in one direction.

There's little you can (legally) do to prevent this happening again - BT
refuse to protect lines at the subscriber's premises. If you want to
protect your line (though it's not strictly legal), you need to fit two
tritium-filled gas discharge tubes - each incoming wire to a solid earth
- where the line cones into the building.

The GDTs look like wire-ended neons, and are available from the usual
suspects. If you're reasonably subtle about your installation, BT can't
detect they're there with their line test equipment, and they won't find
them if they visit your premises, because they won't be looking for
them!
