Well said. You need to look at overall performance - caching, bandwidth 
for access to memory and network interconnect performance.
The real interest, as you say, is in feeding these multi-core CPUs.
For out-and-out performance, there is no interest in overclocking - 
people are looking at coprocessors, such as the FPGAs which drop into an 
Opteron socket, Clearspeed and GPUs (*)

Interestingly enough, the new quad-core Barcelona from AMD has a three 
level on-chip cache, so that you can feed data fast enough to the four 
cores.
