A much better question.  To which I would have replied something like:

IMAP provides much better functionality than POP3 and very few mail 
clients (in fact I can't name one) don't support it.  For those mail 
clients that really only do support POP3 some IMAP servers support POP3 
access to the top level folder. Cyrus does this, for example.
