Did the op state he wanted to upgrade his whole installation or just to 
get phpmyadmin working again?

It seems a bit extreme to suggest a full upgrade when simply setting 
security to use sarge as well will fix the problem immediately without his 
needing to risk a full distro upgrade which he will probably have to do 
remotely and should plan for properly.
