I don't remember red plastic ones, so perhaps they were only in the
larger cities like Melbourne, or perhaps I was too young to notice
back then.  I was in Armidale and Brisbane throughout the 80s and
never visited either of the large cities until the early 90s.

It's also possible that if these indeed were privately-run payphones
that the price was higher.

Anyway, I certainly didn't mean to discredit your story.  And I hope
the faulty phones were fixed and someone was at least fired over it!
