Thanks - that's very useful. It shows that the problem isn't to do with the 
MTU! That transferring a large file with pscp (the Putty version of scp) 
works: if MTU discovery wasn't working I don't see who Putty would be immune.

Any other ideas why ssh gets stuck and plink doesn't?
