That's right. When you were not looking BT installed a bundle of little 
tubes from your location back to the exchange where they connect to an 
enormous installation of similar tubes. They also installed a little 
converter where the signal is printed out, wrapped around the left hind 
leg of a hamster which then runs down the tube to the exchange with the 
packet of data (the right leg is used for traffic in the other direction).
