The last I heard exceed was still based on X11R5. As such it doesn't
implement the RENDER extension, so just about any recent X app will be
intolerably slow, as anything that uses client-side fonts will have to
send the fonts over the network as bitmaps over and over again, rather
than caching them as GlyphSets in the server.

They'll still *work*, for the most part: but you might well die of
boredom waiting for the screen to repaint.
