It's always worth knowing the approach (ifconfig/route) that will work on 
any box as well as the newer stuff.

The fact is that the fundementals do not change. The IPv4 stack is managed 
in much the same way today that it was 10 years ago. 

Firewalling changed a bit with the switch from ipchains to iptables but 
otherwise a networking book from 5 years ago should still be very valid.
