OUCH! £70 is really expensive for a simple VLF receiver and a bit of
logic.  There's some serious money to be made here!  

All it'll take is a simple TRF receiver, a PIC and a MAX232.  The PIC
code is trivial to write - though it's probably already on the 'net
somewhere - and the rest of the work is putting the pieces together.
The total component cost (including a plastic box to house it) would be
<£10, and if you're going to make quantity of them, you could get it to
<£5!  You could sell them for (say) £40 and see a healthy profit whilst
undercutting the competition by a big margin.
