If you're going that route, then a koolu might suit -- I certainly cannot
hear it (over all the other machines in the house ;-) but if you were
running it thin-client there'd be no need for a hard drive, so it would be
totally silent:

They're not exactly fast (Geode 800 running @ 500MHz), but the graphics are
capable of playing video with the likes of xine (if you get the right
drivers), and if you do all the heavy lifting on a box in the
basement/garage/attic you'll have a silent house.
It draws under 10 watts, and is about the size of 3 CD cases stacked on top
of one another, and the only moving part is a 2.5" hard drive, assuming you
need one.
