I reduced the read/write size to 1/2k (rsize=512,wsize=512) and it seems to work.
I don't think that I have fixed the problem as much as made it 'go away'.
The performace is crap, but since it is for overnight compiles it is kind of OK
(until someone winges tomorrow).

The IBM Network Attached Storeage s/ware has a debug mode (which *really* does kill
performance) that shows all of the actions done by a client. The thing seems to create files
and immediately try to read from them before writing. This strikes me as curious, but I
won't pretend to be intimate with the NFS protocol:
