Seems to me it is perfectly lawful to state that a manufacturers/suppliers
warranty is invalid if the box is opened.  HOWEVER,  they cannot invalidate
their obligations under the Sale of Goods Act   (or whatever its called these
days) regarding fitness for purpose etc etc.    Likewise,  if you care to test
it on any given product,  I doubt that the argument that 'the failure occured
outside the warranty period' would stand up in a court of law.  If you buy a
product that should, reasonably, have a useful life of several years, its total
failure after 12 months and a day should not let the manufacturer 'off the hook'
IMHO.
