As I was going to sleep last night I realised I was starting from the
wrong end of the problem. Thanks for ref to the very useful dmesg and
lsusb. They produced:
dmesg
usb 3-2: new low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 24
usb 3-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
input: HID 1ade:1501
as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:12.0/usb3/3-2/3-2:1.0/input/input8
input,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [HID 1ade:1501] on usb-0000:00:12.0-2
usb 3-2: New USB device found, idVendor=1ade, idProduct=1501
usb 3-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0, SerialNumber=0

lsusb
Bus 003 Device 024: ID 1ade:1501

I am going to go look into all this now.
