[Gllug] no nvram

Hi,
 I know there are a few hardware gurus  on the list hence this question:-
I have just taken an old HP pavillion box and installed Kubuntu Gutsy.

      The oddity is that now there is a NO NVRAM message as the hardware 
checks itself before going into the O/s setup to run sequence.

as a matter of course on such an old box I swapped out the CMOS battery but 
cannot say I noticed the NO NVRAM message then, what have I screwed up now ?
