[Gllug] Creating a new password file on an NFS mounted root system

I am seeking to mount a filesystem by NFS root. In fact it is a gentoo
stage 3 tarball. It boots but while the root user exists I have no idea
what the password is.

Can I just copy the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files off some other
system (where the passwords are known), or is there some other way of
doing this?
