   Make sure that the PSU is adequate, (many PSUs now list the absolute
maximum instantaneous peak output, not the running average ratings), and
that cable connectors are suitable, no series-connected M-F power taps for
extra fans, etc.
    If I think a disc is unknown or suspect I use cfdisk (or fdisk) on
Knoppix (or an installed system) to create a single large partition covering
the entire disc, then mke2fs -c -c /dev/hdx1 to write-read patterns over the
entire disc (leave it running and go to bed).
