[Gllug] Old type versus new ADSL?

My guess is that the new ADSL2/2+ will only work at those 20Meg speeds if you
are pretty close to the exchange and/or have superb cabling into your premises.

I am on the Max service and connected between 6.5 and 7.2 Mbps on the occasions
I have bothered to check the ADSL modem stats. I am probably about a mile from
the exchange as far as the wires are concerned (less than that as the proverbial
crow flies !). I assume that as 8 is the theoretical maximum the dslam and
modem are mutually agreeing on a lower stable speed.

As a matter of interest my companies adsl lines will only run at a crap 512kbps
or thereabouts, due to being right at the fringes of the exchange area
(200 yards down the road and 01474 becomes 01322 !). So regrettably ADSL is
highly dependnet on distance and cable quality (inevitably). So dont get yr
hopes up about super-speed ADSL unless you are in a 'good' location.

I saw somewhere on the web a 'calculator' that purports to give you the likely
max speed if you input your current near-end attenuation figure. The attenuation
on our office lines is 64 - which explains the ghastly speed. Attenuation at
home is about 33.
