[Gllug] Keyboard Oddity

Hello,

I am finding that I cannot use apostrophes and inverted commas. For
example as I type:

I called Stephen (I pressed the keys for the abbreviate version of I am).

Another example:

Stephen said: hiver my timbers

(That was Shiver my timbers! in quote marks)

If I hit the key twice, I get something that looks a bit like the right
character: ¨ and ´

Xev indicates the correct code:

KeyRelease event, serial 29, synthetic NO, window 0x3200001,
     root 0x5d, subw 0x0, time 2928437777, (89,-9), root:(854,177),
     state 0x1, keycode 11 (keysym 0xfe57, dead_diaeresis), same_screen YES,
     XLookupString gives 2 bytes: (c2 a8) "¨"
     XFilterEvent returns: False
KeyRelease event, serial 29, synthetic NO, window 0x3200001,
     root 0x5d, subw 0x0, time 2928686574, (200,235), root:(225,377),
     state 0x0, keycode 48 (keysym 0xfe51, dead_acute), same_screen YES,
     XLookupString gives 2 bytes: (c2 b4) "´"
     XFilterEvent returns: False

Any ideas? I am using Centos 5.1.

S.

PS I just found out if I hit space after the intended character it seems
to work viz:

I'm using Centos 5.1
