[Gllug] Getting a second NIC up

I am having some serious difficulties with adding a second NIC: 

lspci reports it as

Ethernet controller: National Semiconductor Corporation DP83815
(MacPhyter) Ethernet Controller 


which seems to bomb out with:

  eth1: DSPCFG accepted after 0 usec

followed by:
 ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth1: link is not ready 

- is this my config or the hardware? 

Ubuntu 8.10 running 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP 

I have tried searching and asking on irc, but to no avail
