I have a q9450 running on a SuperMicro X7SB4 mobo with no issues. Isnt a
desktop machine though, its hosted far far away in a remote DC, runs
CentOS-5 fine ( rather quick too ). [1]

Ofcourse this might not help, since I have no idea about sound card,
grfx interface etc.

The onboard sata interfaces ICH9R do work, just as sata ports - mdraid
later for raid.

I've also been told that the gigabyte p35-ds4 is a good desktop host for
a core2quad proc on CentOS-5, and might even fit into what people
consider 'desktop budgets'.

Finally, you might also want to keep in mind that 5.2 had a major ICH
and sata interface layer upgrade in the kernel, so if you go with
anything pre 2.6.18-92.x kernels - all bets are off :D

HTH

[1] the lower power phenom's are what I am looking at for my next
desktop upgrade from the amd64x2 4800 that is in use at the moment.
