I'd be inclined to say that if you have several drives such that you can
group them into N sets of roughly similar size where each set doesn't
slow the others down when you access it, RAID-5/6 it instantly. With
old drives, reliability is almost certainly going to be more important
than storage space (those drives *will* die one day, and if you wanted
storage space you wouldn't be using drives that old).
