As a further aside,   I had a similar but much lower level noise on my phone
some while back, which changing the microfilter cured.

I believe the adsl carrier generated by the DSLAM is always 'on' and presuambly
with line attenuation would be at a much lower level at your end of the the line
than the adsl signal generated by your modem.  Since switching the modem off
makes the frying go away I would think it pretty much a certainty to be the
microfilter.
