I found NM couldn't handle the rather convoluted wifi authentication
which we have at school (a purely MacOS site). It claimed it could, but
just sat there whirling its balls.

I replaced it with WICD and it works fine. Not only that, I was able to
assist the network admins in diagnosing a rogue access point because
WICD gave a lot more detail and control in testing several different
access points on the same network.
