My network interface is an onboard 10/100 affair, which I presume is Intel. I have done some searching and found that people were having problems with Ubuntu Feisty with Dell network interfaces in 2007, but surely the same problem should not be reoccurring nearly two years later, on what is standard hardware in the UK on the lowest-priced PC kit?

I had a strange network problem recently which was related to the "Wake
on LAN" function of the motherboard/NIC. It worked fine in windows but
under linux it just said "Link not ready, check cable?".

The solution was to switch the PC off, unplug the power, unplug the
network cable, then wait a minute or so. This caused the system to be
fully reset and it's worked fine ever since.

Good luck,
