I have to agree with Tet, anything that reliably allows you to restore your
data coherently to a given point in time qualifies as a 'backup'. The word
means what you want it to mean in your own particular circumstances.
I have always found CD-Rs and DVD-Rs stored sensibly to be reliable when read.
It of course always makes sense to verify whatever backup you make and ideally
every so often do a restore (to a spare filesystem/machine/whatever) to check
the chosen strategy actually works!
