I can hear the difference too, but I'm not really interested in vinyl
records.  Analogue reel-to-reel tape on a properly set up machine beats
ANYTHING else.  There's no need for that Dolby nonsense, either.  Almost
all my professional recording experience has been with analogue machines
then mastered to analogue tape, and then put onto either vinyl or CD.

The final stage (vinyl or CD) is an unfortunate compromise made
necessary by domestic reproduction equipment.  CDs usually win, but only
because they're harder wearing!  I still don't like the "granular"
distortion that's obvious with even the very best D-to-A converters and
filtering.
