How about a happy balance - you and your close colleagues in IT get to 
install what you like, but you restrict the users to the approved software?

Best of all worlds. Unless you want the latest gameX and iTunes 
installed on the company laptops so their children can play on them...

At least it's a happy balance for IT folks... and in the end, isn't that 
what matters most? ;-)
