That's only in the news because it's a very rare and unusual occurrence, and
thus notable. If it were routine, you'd not see anything about it in the
press. Consider that stories about lost laptops containing personal records
no longer make the headlines. It's not because they are now not being lost,
but because it's no longer newsworthy.

Also notable is that the person in question appears to be a sysadmin and/or
network admin, so would have had free reign of much of the company systems
anyway, locked-down desktops or not.
