I'd check out Drupal, which has already been suggested. Free (as in
beer), with lots of facilities. It's not difficult to tailor it to your
needs.

The thing is not to be too ambitious at the start. If you've got little
experience, you'll confuse yourselves, then you'll confuse your users.
