I wonder if they asked us to backport any features from PHP 5.2
that they needed?

Specific version numbers of RHEL packages don't usually mean much
after a while, because we backport so many features from later
packages back.  The kernel "version" 2.6.18 is a case in point.

(I know nothing about PHP, nor about PHP in RHEL ...)
