not necessarily with the end-users though. I would guess they'll see
it as a Windows, Mac or Google choice. I doubt if Unix or Linux will
be mentioned very often.

Android is free to a point but suffers from being locked down by
hardware suppliers.

Well any tech that has a big name and therefore a marketing budget is
going to get more attention than a community-inspired project. I can't
see that Chrome OS will unduly damage the GNU/Linux market though. It
may harm those companies who had aimed at the netbook market but to be
honest Microsoft was starting to eradicate Linux from that market as
well. Mostly by convincing manufacturers to turn netbooks into laptops
with a smaller screen - which for me ruined the attraction of a
netbook.

I'd imagine ChromeOS will have a single key desktop app - Chrome
Browser and everything will be done through there. Google Mail, Docs,
Picasa et al will handle the advertising.

And not just from Google. Such an OS will require an always on
connection. On the road that means mobile broadband or wireless. The
connection provider will no doubt keep logs too although at least the
connection to Google is https.

As am I. :o)
