I have the joy of playing with a reasonable specified homebrew style
storage server which doesn't seem too far off what you're after.
I run a:
- Intel Core(TM) i& 920 @2.67GHz
- 16GB RAM
- 3ware 9650SE-16ML 16 port SATA/SAS Raid Card with BBWC
- 16x Seagate 1.5TB Drives
Configured in RAID6 with a hot spare, I get 17.69 TB usable space.
The rebuild time during light use for a single drive is approx. 6-8
hours.
I've managed to get around 600MB/s read and 400MB/s write locally on
this device when using large block sizes.
I also seem to remember it costing around £4000-4500, which really isn't
a bad price for the space -- even if you compare it to the low end
"enterprise" storage arrays.
