I agree that a GUI should have no place on a desktop. Personally, I
think that a GUI *should* be used on a desktop but for very little. For
example, I've got a minimalistic Openbox install running on Debian Sid
with only firefox (I know, the Mozilla artwork's not free but I'd end up
changing my user agent to firefox anyway), thunderbird and gnome
terminal. I think that wherever usable, a CLI should be used. I'm
currently migrating from Thunderbird to mutt, but I doubt a usable
cli-based firefox-alternative will ever be possible. I also don't view a
GUI as a 'new fangled thing', having used Windows until a couple of
years ago (I wish I'd discovered Linux earlier).
