Bruce, as usual, gives proper answers which you should listen to.

If you are in the "bodge it and run" school of thought, then these two
methods come to mind:

a) make a complete system backup PLUS bare metal boot CD/DVD using Mondo Rescue

b) mirror your system disks. Break the mirror before doing the updates.
    The back out plan is to reboot using the other half of the mirror.
