[Gllug] Monitor detection and screen modes in Debian Lenny

Hello,
   There appear to be some problems detecting monitor capabilities with
Debian Lenny, and there does not appear to be any easy way to input the data
if the monitor is not correctly identified, so only 800x600 or 640x480
display is possible, even with a monitor capable of displaying 1600x1200.
   Is there a correct way to do it? The X server is xorg, but running the
re-configure does not even ask about the screen mode.
